"Who's the crazy one NOW?!"
This was a question posed to me by a coworker asked after an unusual situation happened at the behavioral hospital I worked at in 2021.
Patient "G", a 50 year old female had been on our unit for several weeks. She was quite dilusional, quite somatic, quite interesting. From being pregnant ("I can't take that medication, you know I'm pregnant, you're trying to kill my baby" - she wasn't pregnant, however) to having brain, lung, and/or pancreatic cancer, to having an appointment "tomorrow" to have her shoulders replaced. She would try anything to be taken out of our locked unit onto the medical floor. Know that we did not ignore most of the complaints, but they changed daily.
"G" had alot of auditory hallucinations. From hearing "things" to having full blown conversations with the non-existent. In behavioral health we referred to it as "responding to internal stimuli". She referred to it as having a spiritual connection with others. She would put her hand up close to her mouth, even while wearing a mask (covid pandemic requirement) and talk to her spiritual "advisor".
Needless to say (why do we say that?), it was quite interesting. Several of us inappropriately referred to her as crazy.
One evening, "G" came to the nurses station, concerned because her sister was outside the building and wanted to bring her some things. She stated her sister was near the outside phone. We told her, "There is no phone outside, if your sister wants to bring them to the door we'd be happy to take your things." Here's the deal. Her sister was NOT outside. While we told her there are no phones outside, there ARE emergency phones. We didn't check, how do we know that she ISNT getting that spiritual connection.
She walked away, then used the telephone in the hall. Not sure if she was having a real conversation or not. Within minutes, "G" came back to the nurse's station and asked what the phone number was to call the unit. She actually knew it, she was just reiterating it, stating her sister wanted to call. She then put one hand over her mouth, one finger in her ear, and quietly said something to her internal connection. Within seconds, the main phone rang. The coworker jokingly stated, "wouldn't that be something if that's her sister!"
Guess what? It was.
Coworker exclaimed, as the goosebumps on her arms (and mine) began to rise, "Who's the crazy one NOW?!"
I think we were done for the day. I don't doubt some people have special connections. Not any more.
